Working as a Guide in Norway – Basics Everyone Should Know
Moving to Tromsø and starting work as a guide can be exciting — but also confusing, especially for international guides who are unfamiliar with Norwegian work culture and regulations.
To make things easier, Tromsø Guideforening (TGF), together with HK Norge, has prepared a simple overview of some of the most important basics every guide working in Norway should know.
This guide covers topics such as:
- work contracts
- schedules and overtime
- rest time and breaks
- holidays and pension
- workplace safety
- unions and workers’ rights
The information presented reflects statutory minimum rights in Norway. Employees covered by collective agreements may have stronger protections.
This is the first part of a broader information series we are preparing for guides living and working in Tromsø, including practical topics related to housing, working life, local regulations, and life in the Arctic.
We hope this material helps guides better understand their rights, responsibilities, and working conditions — and supports a healthier and more sustainable tourism industry in Tromsø.
Our members have an access to the WhatsApp group where is possible to discuss specific issues.
But remember; TGF is a professional association focused on community, standards, education, and cooperation within the tourism industry.
For labour rights, contracts, and workplace/legal support, we encourage guides to also connect with HK Norge.
