Exam

A theoretical exam will allow the guide to demonstrate their knowledge. Guides are not expected to know everything, but the most important things and where to find the details.

The exam will offer a second chance later if the guide fails the first attempt. It is designed to encourage participants to develop their skills and knowledge. If the guide fails the second attempt, they will have to wait until the next season to repeat the exam.

Arctic Marine Ecosystem

Marine Mammals in Northern Norway

Northern Norway is home to many fascinating species, most of which can be seen during whale watching tours.

Toothed Whales

The protagonists of the tours for many tourists. Learn about their relationship with the Arctic, what about their behavior here makes them unique, and the challenges they face.

Baleen Whales

The other protagonists of the tours. Learn what species can be found in Northern Norway, what brings them here, and the challenges they face.

Fishing and Whaling

A delicate but important matter that guides might have to address during their tours. Get the real information about this practice and its economic impact in the region, and explore whether it still makes sense today and, if not, what can be done about it.

Sea Birds in Northern Norway

In some tours, guides might not see whales, but in all of them they will see birds! Meet the local icons and learn about their crucial role in the regional ecosystem.

Safety on Board

Review the list of protocols guides should know when guiding. This course is not the place to learn them, but guides should at least know whether the company they might be working for is familiar with them

Guiding RIB Boats

The main things to consider when guiding on a RIB boat.

Guiding in Vessels

The main things to consider when guiding on a big vessel.

Whale Watching Guiding Skills

Learn how a guide effectively establishes trust and leadership in a group, addresses a heterogeneous group of customers, and communicates complex scientific terms through engaging stories. Covers how guides and their guests should behave in the presence of the whales, how to manage guests' expectations without discouraging them, and how to interact with peers and the captain in an assertive way.

Guidelines and Code of Conduct

Covers how guides should agree to behave while guiding and while working with peers in the field, what is allowed and what is not, and what a guide should do if they witness something wrong or make a mistake themselves. Ultimately, this is about building a collaboration culture together.
