The board meeting held on 31 January 2025 marked an early step in restarting Tromsø Guideforening after a long period of limited activity. The discussion centered on whether there is still a need for a guide association in Tromsø and what form it should take in today’s tourism environment.
Participants agreed that guiding in Tromsø has changed significantly over the past two decades, particularly with the growth of Northern Lights tourism. This has created new challenges related to safety, infrastructure, working conditions, and sustainability. The absence of a unified guide voice was identified as a weakness in addressing these issues.
The meeting explored the historical role of TGF and reflected on past challenges, including fluctuating membership and limited continuity due to seasonal work. There was broad agreement that any reactivation should avoid repeating old structures and instead focus on inclusivity, transparency, and practical relevance.
The board concluded that TGF should begin as a pilot initiative, rebuilding trust and engagement gradually, and positioning itself as a constructive partner for guides, authorities, and the wider tourism sector.
